Use a
high-quality name brand anti-virus program, and be sure to
update it regularly. Use it to scan any files, programs,
software, diskettes, USB flash drives, and camera cards (even
new software from a commercial company can contain a virus)
before you use them on your computer.
Make
back-up copies of important documents or files and store them on
separate disks, CDs or tape. Making backups will also protect
your information against accidental file deletion, computer
failure, and other damage.
Always
scan your disks and files after using them on another computer
regardless of the fact that they may have had an anti-virus
program running on it.
Don't open unknown email
attachments, no matter how appealing the message may be. If
you're certain you want to open an email attachment, scan the
file manually with your antivirus software before you open it
(don't rely on the auto-scan).
Don't
go to websites that are questionable or have questionable
content. Never click on a pop up agreeing to download something
for free unless you specifically asked for it no matter how
appealing it may seem!
Always
scan all files you download from the Internet. File sharing
programs like Limewire, Kazzaa and Grokster are a breeding
ground for viruses and Trojans. Don't use them at all!
Downloading commercial or
copyrighted music, programs, or music that you did not pay for
is against the law and is a crime!
Remember: Do not share commercial software with anyone. It is a
violation of copyright laws!
